SERVICE PUPILS PREMIUM

SERVICE PUPIL PREMIUM 2017

This message is for the attention of Regular Forces Service parents based in England. If your child attends a state school, Academy or Free school in England and has been registered with the school as a Service pupil, the school will be granted a Service Pupil Premium of £300.

The Service Pupil Premium (SPP) is provided by the Department for Education to enable schools to offer additional, mainly pastoral, support during challenging times, which could include anything from a Service parent being away, being injured on active service to bereavement. Funds are paid directly to schools; with Head Teachers and school Governors deciding how the funds are used.

Schools with Service children in Reception to Year 11 classes are eligible to receive SPP, but only if your child’s name appears on the school roll as being a Service child. The annual census takes place on 19 January 2017 and children must be registered with the school before this date. You are encouraged to contact the school and make them aware your child is from a Service family. This information is not shared with other organisations and is protected on the National Pupil database.

For more information on eligibility, please see the links below:

Self Employment Awareness Workshops (One Day)

The Self-Employment Awareness Workshop is operated by X-Forces on behalf of the Career Transition Partnership.

The aim of the day is to explore self-employment as an option for resettlement and to look at what you need to consider if you want to explore this further. Working both as a group and individually, you will gain an awareness of what starting up a business means; to you, your family, and your finances. We will discuss the pros and cons of self-employment and look at how to begin planning the launch of a successful business.

X-Forces will provide ongoing support to those who choose to pursue self-employment, providing expert guidance as you start-up and in the early years of your business.

By the end of the one-day workshop you will have a better idea of what starting a business entails and have a clear understanding of what support is on offer, so you can plan your next steps.

Health and Education Resettlement Guide

When you leave military services you become responsible for registering for your own and your family's health care support through local GPs, dentists etc.  This useful guide produced by the Career Transition Partnership will help you find out more about health services available to you.

Dentist - This section gives advice on how to find a dentist in your area and considerations to be made when selecting one. It also includes advice on how to register and what charges to expect to pay. There are links to useful websites too.

Doctor - You never know when you or a member of your family will become ill or need advice so you should always be registered with a family doctor so that they have access to your medical records and know about any previous treatment you may have had.

NHS and private care options are available throughout the UK and you should thoroughly research local provision in the area you are settling in.

AFF - Are you interested in becoming a trustee?

AFF is seeking two volunteers who would like to take part, FREE, in a programme to help you become a trustee. This is normally at a cost of £200 each, but is being kindly sponsored by Serco.
Volunteering as a trustee allows you to learn, develop new skills and meet new people, while making a difference to your local community. What’s more, the average time commitment is only 30 hours a year!

Our Employment, Training, Allowances and Money Specialist Laura Lewin is currently working with Getting on Board, a charity that supports people to become trustees. They offer a bespoke trusteeship service designed to help you find a trustee role to suit your aims and interests.

To find out more or register your interest, contact Laura at etam@aff.org.uk
