Army Families Federation News - Great news for families overseas with children at university

We are delighted to announce that SCV flights for children in tertiary education have increased from one return journey to three return journeys per academic year. Read more
This enhancement to overseas allowances means that students undertaking their first degree can return home to their families during each main holiday period – Christmas, Easter and Summer. The enhancement will take place from 1 December 2015, although JSP 752 will not be updated until 1 January 2016.
There’s further good news for those families who have already self-funded flights for the Christmas 2015/2016 leave period. Reasonable costs may be refunded for these flights.
AFF highlighted in several recent reports that one return journey per year placed an unaffordable burden on parents, particularly as university accommodation is often only available during term times.
Further information can be found in the recently published DIN on the Defence Intranet or from unit admin staff.
To speak to AFF about overseas allowances, contact our Overseas Director, Julie Lowe, on 07795 687930 or

Sing a Song of Crowthorne and Support Alexander Devine!

Saturday 30th January marks our famous Charity Open House Launch event ~ this time for Beatons Crowthorne  ~ and in aid of Alexander Devine Children's Hospice Service, and our 'communitea cause' for 2016. From 10 am to 12 noon.
We'll be notching up three firsts for Crowthorne: debut performances of a song and a poem celebrating the village's unusual history and Crowthorne getting its own bookshop (well, to be precise it's a combined tearooms and bookshop). Come along to the  official opening at 10 am by the Mayor of the Borough of Bracknell Forest, Councillor Mrs Dee Hamilton after which the song and poem will get their first public airing and let's raise lots of money for Alexander Devine!
The specially-written poem will be performed afterwards by author Liz Darcy Jones. 'Sing a Song of Crowthorne' by a group of children from The Dani Harmer Academy of Performing Arts. Can we give them a huge thanks in advance for pulling a rabbit (or should that be a crow?!) out of the box to learn and perform at very short notice. Crowthorne seems to have no end of music, dance and drama lovers! Free samples of Beatons' signature carrot cake and Nonsuch BV loose leaf tea will be served until noon (we hope in return for your donation to the charity). Please note! Our normal service may be briefly suspended during the Open House event.
Will your 'crow' be here
on our Crow Thorn Tree?!
What do we want you do to? Help create a unique 'crow thorn tree' artwork by signing your name and hanging a cut-out crow on the tree made by franchisee Paul Mitchell's creative young family when you donate.  It's an amazing and beautiful object d'art that your 'crow' will be part of!
The Beatons Crowthorne poem and adaptation of Sing A Song of Sixpence - re-titled 'Sing a Song of Crowthorne' - are by our Press Officer who just happens to be best-selling Tea Poet Liz Darcy Jones. She's been associated with the group for the past four years. Both pieces praise Crowthorne's unique characteristics including mentions of Wellington College, Broadmoor, and the now extinct 'broomdashers'!
Fiona Devine, co-founder of the Children’s Hospice, has given us a great thumbs up to our choice of charity, 'We are thrilled here at Alexander Devine to have been chosen by Beatons Tearoom Crowthorne, as their first ‘Communitea Cause’.  There is definitely something very special about a wonderful cosy and cheerful place, to enjoy a proper cup of tea and have an opportunity to pick up a good read too!'

Childhood cold or flu – do you know the difference?

It’s the time of year when colds and flu are doing the rounds in schools and nurseries.
But as a parent, how do you tell the difference? Symptoms of a cold include a runny or blocked nose, sore throat, sneezing and a cough. Flu includes sudden fever, muscle aches, sweating, feeling exhausted and a dry or chesty cough. Although both illnesses share some of the same symptoms, they are caused by different viruses.
Many people think flu is just a bad cold. It’s not. Flu can cause serious complications.
Every year some children with flu become extremely ill, and many of these would have been protected if only they had received their free vaccination.

Those eligible include children aged two, three or four, as well as children in school years one and two. Older children with specific medical conditions, for example asthma or diabetes, should also be vaccinated. For younger children the vaccine is a nasal spray not an injection.
Vaccinating the majority of children can help stop flu circulating amongst the wider population protecting, not just your own child, but those the child comes into contact with such as grandparents.
Karen Calder, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, and Chair of Shropshire’s Health and Well-being board, said:
“If your child is showing symptoms of a cold or flu, the best thing you can do is make sure they have lots of rest and fluids. Talk to the pharmacist or GP about over the counter remedies. And if you need advice when the pharmacists are closed, call 111 to talk to the NHS. You’ll be advised on the best course of action.”
More information on colds and flu including a symptoms checker visit NHS
For advice and information on how to stay safe and well this winter visit:
If you child hasn’t been vaccinated for flu talk to their school or your GP.

Applying for Civil Service Job Vacancies

The Civil Service helps the Government of the day to develop and deliver its policies as effectively as possible.
It incorporates three types of organisations – departments, agencies, and non-departmental government bodies (NDPBs) that work in a wide range of areas, touching on everyone’s day-to-day lives, such as education, health and policing.
Because our organisations deal with so many different aspects of government, civil servants work in an enormous variety of roles.
Becoming a civil servant could be as simple as applying for one of the many jobs advertised on our jobs website.  We also offer a variety of fast track routes for promising graduates and experienced professionals.

Our professional entry routes encourage people with skills developed in the private sector to transfer into the Civil Service at the right level. You can then apply those skills to make a real difference to our everyday lives. There are 22 different professions covered, and a number of different ways to apply.
