Supporting Service Pupils Moving Schools

Service children are subject to mobility as a result of their parents’ service and there is good evidence to show that this mobility can have an impact on their education.
With this in mind, the Directorate Children and Young People (DCYP) have put together a downloadable resource aimed at Service families, welfare staff as well as professionals within schools and local authorities. The aim is to share good practice and open people’s eyes to the opportunities and challenges that exist around Service children.
Please click here to read the resource online and/or download.

Forces Media Academy - Service Leavers and Veterans Offered Free Media Course

The Forces Media Academy has launched a unique media course for service leavers and veterans which will be taught in a live media environment.

The Forces Media Academy is run by the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC), the parent company of the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) and Forces TV. We specialise in providing media services to the UK Armed Forces.

The Academy is funded by the Chancellor using LIBOR Funds. The Royal British Legion has also contributed substantial financial support.

Students on the free one-year Higher National Certificate (HNC) Media Production Course also receive a bursary of £18k to help with living costs.

The first course starts on 25th September 2017 and will run until July 2018 at SSVC’s headquarters in Buckinghamshire, so students will have the opportunity to work with award-winning media teams alongside the programme of lectures.

Forces Media Academy Director, Alistair Halliday, said: “We are delighted to offer this bespoke course to service leavers and veterans who are interested in pursuing a second career in the media. This will include those who’ve suffered injuries or sickness while in service.”

Work experience and practical skills feature heavily in the course, which has modules such as: Development and Techniques of Film and Video Editing, Promotional Video Production and Production of Multi-Platform Radio Programmes.

“The Forces Media Academy is part of the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC), which has a proven history of media production with long-established and close links with the media, digital, and broadcast industries. We’ll harness these to set up high quality work experience which will enhance the ability of the students to get a good job afterwards,” added Halliday.

“We are most grateful for the support of charities and companies, in particular The Royal British Legion, which has most generously provided the bursary.

“This course is a perfect fit for service leavers and veterans with an interest in, and aptitude for, the media. It will equip them with skills for a range of roles such as a producer, multimedia journalist, and content creator.”

The Royal British Legion's Head of Grants and Social Policy, Daniel Elser, said: "The Academy’s work is innovative and practical, building on the existing and highly transferrable skills of those who serve in HM Armed Forces. We’re eager to follow the first cohort’s progress, and proud to provide bursary funding to make the course accessible to as many future media professionals as possible."
SSVC is also the parent company of the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) and Forces TV, and specialises in providing media services to the UK Armed Forces around the globe.

Service Life Insurance - SLI365

You can protect the future of your family from today until 2042 at a fixed price FOR THE WHOLE TERM. Perfect for safeguarding your mortgage and with a Government guarantee of payment for operational casualties.

Service Life Insurance 365 was designed and introduced by MOD in 2007 to provide a robust, trustworthy solution for enduring Military Life Cover – when purely commercial operators declined to provide cover for Service Personnel facing the threat from war, weapons of mass destruction or terrorism.

Exclusively available online, you can either pay your premium by Direct Debit from your bank – ideal if you intend to retain SLI365 as a civilian (through to age 65 if you wish) or through your pay account with Joint Personnel Administration ‘JPA’.

SLI365 can provide up to £200,000 lump sum benefit in the event of death or terminal illness - covering all peacetime risks such as traffic accidents and illness. Most importantly, because SLI365 is available under a contract with MoD, it guarantees protection for up to 25 years for any unforeseen operational risk.

A summary of the benefits include:

  • Cover on and off duty, 365 days a year
  • Up to £200,000 lump sum benefit on death or diagnosis of terminal illness – covering all peacetime risks
  • Quick application progress - acceptance a certainty – (18-45 year olds)
  • No medical required
  • Fixed premium

For every policy taken out we make a donation to tri-service charity, The Not Forgotten Association (nfassociation.org) to support the great work they do in providing help for serving injured and veterans.

So, have a look at a brochure available now from most local HIVEs or visit www.sli365.com where you can get a quote for your chosen term (anything between 5 and 25 years) and chosen benefit amount.

If you would like more information, please visit our website www.sli365.com – or drop an email to sliteam@sli365.com to request a unit briefing from our ex-military manager.
